Lanzarote and the other Canary islands are 1.000 Km. far from peninsular Spain and 100 from the African coast. Lanzarote is the most eastern and northern one. Its surface is about 800 km2 and the relief is low and not very mountainous. The highest point is near 700 meters above sea level. Its an island with a volcanic origin and topography.

Guanches are the old and first inhabitants, and many traces of their lifestyle are preserved. In 1312 the italian navigator Lancelotoo Malocello reached the island, and gave it his name. The conquest of Canary Island began in 1402, a war of near one hundred years that started exactly with Lanzarote.

Entitled as Biosphere Reserve in 1993 due to its natural values, 12 enclaves are protected by the Canarian Law of Natural Places, and Timanfaya Parc is one of the 12 National Parcs of Spain. 90% of its surface is under legal protection.
